This presentation will review how children are affected by the emerging world of computer technology. Research on the impact of the portable and instantly accessible source of screen time in children’s learning, behavior and family dynamics has lagged behind its rate of adoption. However, from current available researches we do know that mobile and interactive media exposure can affect children’s development physically, intellectually, socially and psychologically. Mobile media can effectively distract and entertain young children, hence it can be used to occupy young children during daily routine and thus become a common behavioral regulation tool for parents. This utility is of short term value, but is worthy to study whether this usage can be detrimental to later social-emotional outcome. The instant accessibility and portability of mobile devices make them more likely to displace human interactions and other enriching activities. Some preacademic skills, such as self-regulation, empathy, social skills and problem-solving are primarily needed to be learned through children exploring the natural environment, interacting with peer and caregivers. These activities can all possibly be displaced by mobile media use.? Because mobile media differ from television in its multiple modalities, interactive capacities and near ubiquity in children’s lives, the pediatric guidance will be needed. Clinicians should also help the parents gaining information on deciding which technology and content is best for their children and how the parents monitor and set rules for use.
